"Opening the Gates"
A Memorial to Alexander Pierre Tureaud, Sr.
A.P. Tureaud Sr. Civil Rights Memorial Park, New Orleans
"Opening the Gates of Opportunity" is a commissioned sculpture by artist Sheleen Jones, honoring civil rights activist and attorney A.P. Tureaud (1899–1972). Tureaud was a pivotal figure in the fight against segregation and served as the attorney for the New Orleans chapter of the NAACP. He worked closely with Thurgood Marshall to dismantle Jim Crow segregation in New Orleans.
In her sculpture, Jones depicts Tureaud opening the gates, symbolizing the "Opening the Gates of Opportunity." The artwork incorporates wrought-iron gates, paying tribute to the ironwork crafted by enslaved Africans and free men of color in New Orleans—a vital element of the city's rich architectural heritage.
